CASE SUMMARY
In a category defined by apathy, B2B fuel marketing is often relegated to transactional convenience. The strategy for Petro-Canada bypassed these tropes by shifting the focus from the fuel in the tank to the promise in the trailer. They moved beyond treating the driver as a mere delivery mechanism, instead celebrating them as a sympathetic hero. By uncovering meaning in the machine, the truth that cargo is actually a fulfilled human promise, they transformed Petro-Canada from a functional stop into a destination of respect. This emotional pivot drove a significant leap in brand preference and a 34% increase in EBITDA, proving that B2B success is found in human connection, not just commodity pricing.
In the Canadian fuel category, the professional driver segment is the ultimate high stakes, low interest audience. While they represent a massive portion of the business, they view fuel as a parity commodity and gas stations as a forced stop, a necessary evil in a gruelling 14-hour workday. Petro-Canada faced a problem: drivers were choosing stops based purely on proximity or cent-per-litre discounts. The brand was trapped in a transactional cycle where its purpose, "Live by the Leaf," felt like a corporate slogan for commuters rather than a meaningful promise for the people who actually move the country.
They needed to break the transactional relationship and transform PetroCanada into a preferred destination for a segment that felt invisible, unappreciated, and deeply cynical toward traditional corporate ‘thank you’ messaging.
While the general public sees semi-trucks as highway inconveniences, for the person waiting at the end of the road, that truck is a fulfilled human promise.
Reposition Petro-Canada as a "Destination of Respect" by celebrating the driver not as a delivery mechanism, but as a hero fulfilling those promises.
They launched “Special Delivery”, a cinematic narrative centered on the emotional weight of cargo. The creative followed a trucker on a detour to return a lost toy, proving that their job goes far beyond moving freight. They surrounded the driver with this hero narrative using a targeted media mix. OOH and trade media validated their grit during the work phase of their day, while immersive Cinema and Connected TV reached them during their rest phase.
Planning identified the validation gap that truckers were feeling: the profound distance between how drivers saw themselves (essential lifelines) and how the world saw them (highway obstacles). They applied the principles of mental availability by realizing that to win the category, they needed to talk to them about more than fuel and the moment of transaction.
The agency needed to show that we understood the life of a driver. Planning moved the strategy from a transactional utility to a more emotional one. By reframing cargo as human promises, they gave the driver a reason to choose Petro-Canada that a discount card could never replicate.
The results were definitive. They bypassed traditional B2B tropes to reach a cynical audience, transforming a transactional utility into a destination of respect.
Brand used most often grew by 29%, while pro driver advocacy increased by 33%. Most importantly, this emotional advocacy drove a 34% year-over-year increase in wholesale EBITDA, nearly seven times the original target.
They proved that in a category ruled by price, the brand that truly sees the human behind the wheel is the one that wins.
